A former SGS College student, who appeared on a hit BBC show, returned to his old college.

The college's art and design department welcomed Matt Smith-Wood, a finalist on BBC One's Interior Design Masters. During his visit, Matt shared valuable insights from his post-graduation career and his exciting journey on the television series.

Matt cultivated his passion for design at an early age, influenced by his father's profession in restoring Japanese antiques. He graduated from SGS College with an extended diploma in art and design.

He further honed his skills at Coventry University, studying interior architecture and design, before returning to his hometown, Cheltenham, to work as a bathroom designer.

His recent success on Interior Design Masters, hosted by Alan Carr and judged by interiors guru Michelle Ogundehin, has put him on the map in the world of interior design.

The show challenges 10 emerging designers to revamp various spaces, with Matt making it to the final, where he impressed the judges with his 'elegant brutalist' style.

During his talk, Matt recounted the thrill of the competition, particularly the final challenge of redesigning holiday lodges in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. His design, which included ambitious chandeliers and meticulously painted panels, received high praise from guest judge, Jonathan Adler, who admired Matt's nod to the baroque architecture of Blenheim.

Speaking to current art and design students, Matt offered practical advice on navigating the competitive field of interior design and seizing opportunities for career advancement.

Kayleigh Reynolds, learning area manager for art and design, said: "Matt's journey since being a student with us has been fantastic. Having spent two years here, we had the pleasure of knowing him for a longer time, and everything he articulated validates the conversations we have with students.

"It was kind of him to give up time and share his insights with our current students, all of whom were a little star-struck and highly inspired by what he had to say. His open-minded and proactive approach to being creative has earned him the excellent reputation he deserves. We can't wait to see what he does next; we're all behind him!"

Matt Smith-Wood said: "It was so nice to come back. I realised how much I miss college - I had the best time there! Nothing but good memories."

As Matt looks forward to a future filled with commercial design projects and hopes to engage in more international work, his journey continues to inspire both students and the art and design faculty at SGS College.
