Ribston student is finalist in international competition

A talented student at Ribston Hall High School has made it to the finals of an international competition.

Tabitha Riley, a year 12 student at the Gloucester grammar school, was one of 30 designers who took part in Junk Kouture's UK final in London.

Her work was among 30 haute-couture designs, made from 100% recycled materials, created and modelled by talented secondary and college students.

She was chosen as one of 10 students to represent London in the international finals, alongside finalists from the US, Italy, France, Ireland and the UAE.

Tabitha's design, 'Cerulean,' was made from old blinds from the school's textile room and includes jewellery, shoes, and a hat.

Nicola Finch, Ribston's curriculum lead for design, said: "With fast fashion often being in the news and environmental and sustainability issues being a concern for many young people, this is an incredible opportunity for our students to be more aware of and actively involved in addressing the impact of fast fashion.

"We are incredibly proud of Tabitha and everything she has achieved with this amazing design - from designing the dress, making the hat and upcycling shoes with great intricacy and attention to detail. It truly is an innovative and stylish design."

This is not the first time Tabitha has demonstrated her cutting-edge design vision and creativity. Last year, she placed first in the school's first sustainable fashion show, with a showstopping corseted top with trousers and sleeves embellished with ruffle.

Alec Waters, headteacher of Ribston Hall High School, said: "Tabitha's success in the Junk Kouture competition is a testament to her dedication, talent, and the supportive environment we strive to provide at Ribston Hall. We encourage all our students to explore their passions and develop their skills, and it's wonderful to see such positive outcomes."

Junk Kouture is open to 12 to 19-year-olds and challenges young people to design, upcycle, and create high-end couture from recycled junk, showcasing their designs and representing their schools on stages across the world. The competition promotes creativity, sustainability and environmental awareness among young people globally.

The final 10 designs from the UK will compete against 50 other designs - 10 from each of Junk Kouture's other finals in the US, Italy, France, Ireland and the UAE.

At the World Final, there will be six individual City Designer Awards for each location, plus the Junk Kouture World Designer of the Year.

Tabitha is now eagerly awaiting the announcement of the date and location of the World Final, which will mark the culmination of months of hard work and creative endeavour.
