Gloucester school welcomes resident dog

After six months of careful research, a Gloucester school has welcomed a puppy to its school community.

Cooper, an eight-week-old labrador, is finding his feet at Denmark Road High School.

In an email to parents and students, and writing on the grammar school's Facebook page, the school said:

"Over the past six months, we have explored the possibility of having dogs on site, through trial periods and visits to other schools with established school dog programmes. We are confident that this decision will greatly benefit our school community in numerous ways.

"Through our research and trials, we have identified several benefits to having a school dog, including but not limited to:

• Reducing stress and anxiety

• Fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere

• Encouraging expression and participation

• Fostering a sense of responsibility

• Helping build confidence

• Providing a welcoming atmosphere to school

"Cooper will gradually become accustomed to the school environment and routines, ultimately providing support to both students and staff."

During his initial period of training and adjustment, Cooper will be living in the school's reception area. He won't be around student areas of the school until he is fully acclimatised, probably after half term.

Excited students have been advised not to visit the new school dog in reception just yet, while he takes his time to settle into school life.

Cooper officially belongs to one of Denmark Road's assistant headteachers, so has a loving family home when he's not in school.

Cooper will be trained through Kennel Club approved programmes, and his vaccination records will be diligently maintained as part of the school's risk assessment protocol.

There is a full risk assessment for Cooper on the school website, which will be reviewed regularly.

Parents can email the school if their child doesn't want to or is unable to interact with a dog for any reason.

Clare Giblin, headteacher, said: "We hope that the addition of Cooper to our school community will bring joy and enrichment to all. Please join us in welcoming him as he becomes an integral part of life at Denmark Road."
