A Level students bring smiles to hospital

Graphic communication students at Cirencester College have unveiled new murals at Cirencester Hospital.

The A Level students were tasked with designing and painting murals for the Coln Ward.

They first visited the hospital in October last year to get an idea of the space to inspire their designs. They all designed ideas, and year 2 students Rosie, Erin, Millie, Istvan and Violet's designs were chosen for the murals.

The murals were finished in July 2024 and year 1 students helped bring the ideas to life and paint the murals. The paint and materials were funded by the Hospital League of Friends, which offered £200 to pay for the materials.

Millie, year 2 student, said: "I enjoyed painting the waves with different textures. This was a fun experience and the first mural I have ever done!"

Minna, year 1 student, said: "This project was great because I got to work with people I've never worked with before. I was nervous at the start but in the end, I found it really fun, and it feels like we made a difference."

Karen, senior sister and ward manager, said: "The Coln Ward Day Room was a soulless clinical magnolia room, which was not used apart from staff meetings. This room is now a bright area for patients to come in and sit and enjoy the artwork.

"The students understood how a ward works, and they were incredibly mature. They were always polite, including talking to patients who came in to watch them painting.

"I now have an assistant who will be using the room for ward activities, such as art therapy, bingo and chatting. We have also had amazing response from relatives who have had sad news, and the designs give a smile to their faces in a difficult situation."
