School gets grant to improve facilities and access for local communities

Belmont School has carried out £68k improvements to its facilities, thanks to community capital grant funding from Cheltenham Borough Council.

The Cheltenham special school, which caters for children with moderate and complex learning needs, now has a purpose-built disabled adapted wet room, with accessible toilet facilities, a stretcher bed for washing and showering and hoisting facilities.

Access to the new wet room has been improved with wider doorways and level access from inside the school and ramped level access from outside.

Cheltenham communities can also benefit from using these facilities at external events that may be held at the school.

Kevin Day, Belmont School head teacher, said: "We're delighted to receive this grant. This additional inclusive facility has made a world of difference to the school and also to the community groups who use our site, including Goals Beyond Grass, an accessible cycling group. It is a cornerstone facility for inclusive activities and respite care at Belmont, both in and out of school hours."

Cllr Flo Clucas, member for communities and safety, said: ''This is terrific news! I'm delighted to see this grant awarded to Belmont School. It not only gives the school better facilities, but also opens up their fantastic facilities to our local communities.

"Cheltenham Borough Council's disabled facilities capital fund, financed through the county council's Better Care Fund, is open to applications. If any Cheltenham communities or organisations believe they could offer improved inclusive facilities, I'd strongly encourage them to make an application.''
