250,000 apprentices needed to tackle climate change

Friends of the Earth is calling on the government to create 250,000 green apprenticeships to help the UK reach climate targets.

In a new report, the campaigning organisation said the apprenticeships would tackle youth unemployment and help the UK work towards carbon neutral by 2050, as reported by The Times.

Apprentices would develop skills essential to moving the UK towards net zero carbon, including installing electric car chargers, converting homes to zero carbon heating, planting woodland and building flood defences.

The Friends of the Earth said the government should invest £10 million over five years to create 250,000 apprenticeships in England and Wales.

The government has said it is determined to build back greener from the pandemic and aims to support up to two million green jobs and apprenticeships by 2030.
