Rundown Cheltenham shop to become a pub

A rundown shop in Cheltenham which has sat empty for almost six years could soon be transformed into a pub.

Amber Taverns Limited has been granted a premises license for the former Sports Direct site which sits in the Strand area of High Street.

It has been vacant since July 2018 when the retailer shut its doors and is considered by some to be the town's worst eyesore.

It has failed to attract a replacement business despite numerous efforts to market it.

Amber Taverns has now stepped in to offer it a new lease of life.

It has been granted permission by Cheltenham Borough Council for the sale and consumption of alcohol at the site from Sunday to Thursday 11am to midnight and on Fridays and Saturdays 1am.

Amber also sought permission for film, live music, and dancing to take place at the venue.

It said the opening hours would be 10am to 12.30am Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 1.30am Fridays and Saturdays.

A planning application by Amber to change the use of the site at 104 from retail to a drinking establishment was approved in April.

It currently operates 165 public houses across England, Scotland, and Wales, including The Doctors in Gloucester.

It is known for restoring premises in conservation areas or listed buildings.
