County council to offer Kickstart Scheme

From January 2021, Gloucestershire County Council will be offering Kickstart placements as part of its early careers offer.

The Kickstart Scheme is a new incentive from the government for 16 to 24 year olds who currently claim Universal Credit and are at serious risk of becoming long-term unemployed. The scheme provides funding for employers to create new six-month work placements for these young people. Government funding will entirely cover the relevant national minimum wage for 25 hours per week, plus associated employer National Insurance contributions. The young person will receive invaluable, paid work experience and the opportunity to develop their skills.

In addition to offering placements as an employer, the council will also be acting as a Gateway for small employers looking for placements or further support. This means that for employers who can provide less than 30 placements, the council will act as a representative and will apply on behalf of a number of smaller businesses.

Employers who are able to provide 30 or more job placements can apply to the scheme directly through the government website.

Gloucestershire County Council already has great employers working with it. If you would like to join them or find out more about the Kickstart Scheme, please contact the council's apprenticeship project coordinator, Daniel Boon daniel.boon@gloucestershire.gov.uk
