Warning after fraudsters target Gloucester

Police have issued a warning after they received a number of reports of fraudsters posing as police officers targeting the Longlevens area of Gloucester.

According to Gloucestershire Constabulary during the last seven days "a number of elderly individuals have been contacted by fraudsters claiming to be from police forces or fraud squads from London."

"The callers claimed they had arrested someone who was in possession of their bank cards," said a statement from the police.

"The fraudster will then claim that the individual needs to transfer money to a safe account or withdraw it all together as a safeguarding measure.

"One incident saw the caller send a taxi to the residents address after convincing them to attend a cash point and withdraw money, with another taxi then arriving to collect the money from them.

"Neither the police, nor your bank will ever ask you to move or withdraw your money and we are asking you to please share this information with elderly relatives or neighbours who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams."

Police advise anyone receiving a call of this nature to hang up immediately and call them on 101 or 999 if the incident is ongoing.

"If possible we advise using a different phone or waiting five minutes to ensure that the call has been disconnected," said the statement.

If you suspect that you may have been the victim of fraud please report this to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report-a-fraud-including-online-crime.

You can also report fraud by calling police on 101.
