Top five things to do in Gloucestershire this weekend

As the heat continues to soar across the county, here is our top pick of places to spend your time in the sun this weekend.

1# Raise a glass to fine ale at Eastleach Village Hall, Eastleach

Southrop School PTA is organising an afternoon and evening of family fun at the first Southrop & Eastleach Festival Of Fine Ales.

From 3.30pm at Eastleach Village Hall on Saturday, a wide selection of local fine ales will be on offer, together with a BBQ. Non alcoholic drinks will be available along with wine and a local cider for non beer drinkers.

Ales set to be on offer include Arkells' Hoperation, Donnington's Cotswold Gold, Wychwood's Hobgoblin, Brakspear's Oxford Gold and North Cotswolds Brewery's Cotswold Best.

There's lots on offer for children too - they'll be able to play on the recently refurbished playground on site, and there'll be face painting and children's games too.

2# Be wowed by the acoustic talent of The Cody Sisters Band at Lansdown Hall & Gallery, Lansdown

These young sisters and their bass player have established themselves as one of the true acoustic treasures on the Colorado bluegrass and folk circuit.

Their beautiful harmonies, incredible instrumentation, and original songs and sound always leave a lasting impression.

They're coming towards the end of a UK tour and have been selling out venues across the country

The Cody Sisters are being supported by Stroud's own The Lazy Susans who will be performing the opening set.

The Lazy Susans' eclectic sound mixes Western swing with Johnny Cash via The Levellers, and features close-harmony singing, crazy fiddles, accordion, double bass and guitar. A hoe-down is guaranteed and dancing may occur!

Tickets for the gig are £12 in advance from Trading Post, Kendrick Street, Stroud, or online from www.theticketsellers.co.uk  or £14 on the door.

3# Enjoy an intimate festival atmosphere for free at Paxford village green, near Chipping Campden

A small Cotswold village is staging its very own music festival this weekend - and the weather looks set to be glorious.

Paxfest is a small family-friendly live music festival being held on the Paxford village green on Saturday, adjacent to the Churchill Arms.

The festival starts at 1pm and is set to run until around 8pm and will feature live music from bands, duos and solo acts playing everything from jazz and rock to pop and folk.

Admission is free and there will be a barbeque, teas and refreshments, raffle, free parking and a play area for the younger visitors.

The Churchill Arms backs onto the green and offers exceptional food, wines and ales.

The event is in aid of the Paxford Village Community Hall which needs to raise £20,000 for refurbishment.

4# Sizzle in the sun for a good cause at Stroud District Council's National Democracy Week Garden Party

The story of a remarkable woman who played a key role in securing equal voting rights for women will be told at a big celebration in Stroud.

Stroud District Council is staging a National Democracy Week Garden Party on Sunday, July 1, to mark 90 years since the Equal Franchise Right 1928.

Margaret Hills was a significant organiser and speaker in the national suffrage movement for 20 years, and later became Stroud Urban District Council's first female councillor.

A talk on her life is just one of the many activities lined up by SDC's elections department to celebrate the 90th anniversary of equal voting rights for women and men.

The event is family-friendly and for all ages, with actors, debates, workshops, a mock election, guest speakers and, of course, voter registration. There will be home-made cakes on sale, as well as 'Equali-teas' served too.

5# Sample the future of virtual reality at Cheltenham Music Festival

The Virtual Reality Orchestra is set to return to Cheltenham High Street for two weeks during Cheltenham Music Festival - this time with a space theme.

With over 2,000 people enjoying the free experience last year, the Virtual Reality Orchestra is back by popular demand - this year with one of classical music's most famous pieces: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

On climbing inside the brightly coloured shipping container and donning a headset, the viewer is transported on stage, surrounded by the strings, wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists of the Philharmonia Orchestra and their conductor Esa Pekka Salonen.

This year, the experience is inspired by the 40th anniversary of the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft and the Golden Records they each carried.

Intercut into the orchestra's performance are scenes from interstellar space taken by Google's VR team in partnership with NASA.
