Top five things to do in Gloucestershire this weekend

There's lots going on in and around the county to keep yourself, as well as your family and friends occupied this weekend.

1# Chance to meet 'This Country' stars at book signing

There's a chance to meet the 'genius siblings' behind the hit BBC comedy This Country in Cirencester on Saturday (October 12).

Charlie and Daisy May Cooper, the brother and sister behind the show, will be signing copies of This is This Country, the official book of the show, at Octavia's Bookshop in Black Jack Street.

The pair will appearing from 11.30am and the bookshop has urged people to wrap up warm as there's likely to be a queue, but they have plenty of books available.

The award-winning show documents the day-to-day lives of young cousins Kerry and Lee 'Kurtan' Mucklowe who live in a small village in the Cotswolds.

Filmed in the same mocumentary style as The Office, the show follows them as they interact with the other residents of their claustrophobic Cotswold village: the local vicar (and one-time 80s popstar), Reverend Francis Seaton; aspiring tattoo artist, bodyguard and S Club 7 fan, Mandy Harris; and bookies' favourite for Worst Father in Britain, Martin Mucklowe.

2# Fly a kite at Taurus Crafts

The skies above Taurus Crafts are set to be awash with colour on Sunday (October 13) as giant sculptural kites take to the air at the annual Kite Day event.

The spectacle will be happening from 11am until 4pm and is run in collaboration with the professionals of Avon Kite Flyers Club who will be putting on the display throughout the day.

The club flyers bring out all of their big kites to really make an impact and hope to promote the enjoyment of kite flying and provide a friendly focus for kite flyers of all ages, abilities and depths of interest.

The event happens on Taurus Crafts' event field and features a large space for public kite flying adjacent to the experts showcase flying area, so all kite flying visitors are welcome.

The Kite Club will also be helping families make their own kites in a workshop that gives those with a crafty nature but no kite the opportunity to get involved in the fun. The workshops are £5 and run from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm.

3# Search for Wally at the Corinium Museum

This half-term, Wally, the world's favourite children's book character - wearing a red-and-white striped shirt and black-rimmed specs - will be travelling the country, appearing in museums, including a visit to Corinium Museum in Cirencester.

Families will be able to join the search for Wally at the museum as part of Where's Wally? The Big Museum Hunt, organised by Walker Books and Kids in Museums, to celebrate the release of the new book, Where's Wally? Double Trouble at the Museum.

Launching in time for October half-term, the promotion will run from October 12 until November 3. Each participating museum will create and promote their own Where's Wally? search-and-find trail as part of this nationwide campaign, giving families the chance to receive an 'I Found Wally!' sticker at the end and to enter the Where's Wally? and Kids in Museums grand prize draw competition.

4# Media doctor Dawn Harper to open Cheltenham Memory Walk

People across Gloucestershire are being called on to unite against dementia by signing up for Alzheimer's Society's Cheltenham Memory Walk, taking place at Pittville Park this Sunday, October 13.

Opening the walk this year will be Gloucestershire-based GP Dr Dawn Harper. A popular and engaging medical expert, Harper is well-known for her presenting role on Channel 4's award-winning series 'Embarrassing Bodies', where she explores and simplifies complex medical issues.

Alzheimer's Society has pledged to invest £150 million in the next decade to search for better treatments and work towards a cure for dementia.

Walkers can complete a 3km or 6km route through the picturesque park, in aid of dementia research. Both routes will start and finish at Pittville Pump Rooms.

The 3km route will involve a gentle stroll around the ornamental side of the park, before crossing into the wooded western side and is suitable for walkers of all ages, including pushchairs and wheelchairs. The longer 6km walk will be two laps of the shorter route and includes a detour around the wild meadow.

5# Batsford Arboretum gears up for spectacular autumn colour

Autumn brings a blaze of colour to Batsford Arboretum and this year is expected to be particularly special thanks to an ideal mix of sunshine and showers during the spring and summer months.

Home to one of the largest private collections of trees and shrubs in the country, Batsford Arboretum is famed for putting on a show-stopping display of reds, golds and yellows from mid-October until mid-November thanks the collection of Japanese maples, Sorbus, Euonymus and cherries dotted around the 56-acre gardens.

Expect to see spectacular autumn colours at Batsford Arboretum, near Moreton-in-Marsh.

As well as amazing colour, visitors to Batsford can soak up the smells of autumn as the Cercidiphyllum japonicum - known as the Katsura tree - release a sweet burnt sugar smell, similar to that of caramel or candyfloss.
