Top five things to do this weekend in Gloucestershire

Not interested in watching England play this weekend? We've found a whole host of alternative things to do this weekend throughout the county.

1# Watch the heart-warming production of Little Voice at The Barn Theatre, Cirencester

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice concludes a hugely successful first season for the 200-seat Barn Theatre in Cirencester.

Following on from the tremendous critical success of the theatre's productions of The Secret Garden and Simon Stephens' play, One Minute, the production runs from July 7 to August 4.

Olivier award-winner for Best Comedy The Rise and Fall of Little Voice tells the heart-warming story of a reclusive Northern girl-next-door whose remarkable ability to impersonate the great singers of old brings her into the spotlight.

Pushed by a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking mother and her equally unappealing talent agent boyfriend, timid 'Little Voice' will need to conquer more than just stage-fright if she is to find her own voice in the world.

The cast includes newcomer and Italia Conti graduate Sarah Louise Hughes in the title role of Little Voice.

Tickets are £14-£30 from the box office at barntheatre.org.uk   or 01285 648255 .

2# Celebrate the beauty of the written, spoken and sung word at Wordfest, Gloucester Cathedral

This celebration of all things 'word' is set to be an amazing weekend of talks, poetry, music, comedy, storytelling, crafts and much more.

Cotswold farmer and TV presenter Adam Henson will be one of the guests at Wordfest 2018.

The marquees will be up in Lower College Green, the conversation and the beer will be flowing, and a fantastic line-up of speakers, activists, authors and musicians will be making their way to Gloucester for what will be a memorable and exciting event for the city.

The programme of free events kicks off on Friday, July 6, at 4pm with Adam Henson and a 'drop-in after-school' informal event for all the family.

All throughout Saturday and Sunday there will be free family events, games, workshops, storytelling, busking, poetry slams, and even a suffragette banner procession led by Helen Pankhurst.

Whether your interest is music, crafts or conversation, and whatever your age, drop in to Wordfest and find something to enjoy for free.

3# Hop on a vintage bus at GWSR Toddington station

You wait a year for a bus and then up to 48 all turn up at once - but this is for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Stream Railway's  11th Annual Bus Rally, at Toddington station on Sunday, July 8.

This popular event is set to be a colourful occasion with a wide variety of operator liveries, most now long consigned to ever more distant memory.

As Austen Shapcott, co-organiser with David Martin who along with Matt Willis is one volunteer marshals of the Bus Rally, says: "We simply couldn't take any more in the space we have at Toddington - in fact we would have to turn away any late applicants.

"So this will be our biggest ever event - if we had the space it would be even bigger!

"It's not just a great day for bus owners, it's a chance for visitors to enjoy the delightful combination of steam trains and beautifully restored classic buses with plenty of opportunity to ride on several of them.

4# Browse the creative talent of the Forest of Dean and Wye at Taurus Crafts, Lydney

The weekend features a pop-up art exhibition, 13 onsite artisan businesses and a specialist art market dedicated to local independent artists and makers on Sunday, July 22.

Kicking off the weekend of art will be the pop-up art exhibition by Emily Johnson whose country inspired art and animal portraits will be adorning the walls of their function room.

Emily says she has "always being torn between sitting in with a paint set and the call of the countryside, it's not a surprise that I have ended up combining these interests."

The weekend of art culminates in The Art Market, which offers visitors the chance to discover the wealth of talent the local area has to offer, with stalls, activities, food, drink and live music.

The Art Market is free to enter and is open from 11am until 4pm on Sunday, July 22.

Visit www.tauruscrafts.co.uk   and social media pages for more information and updates.

5# Catch a glimpse of the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team at The Cotswold Show, Cirencester Park

Originally founded as a showcase for countryside pursuits, show visitors can expect to learn all about traditional rural skills through demonstrations and hands-on experiences.

Have a go at shooting clays, archery and even ferret racing, and watch the experts at work in displays of falconry, saddlery, beekeeping, wood carving and more.

The show's original ethos "where town meets country" is still adhered to with masses to see and do for the whole family throughout the weekend including tree climbing and bungee trampolines, a traditional Punch and Judy Show, a working dog display, the Dog and Duck Show and the World of Dogs area.

The food festival element of the Show continues with the Cookery Theatre featuring chefs from Cotswolds hotels and restaurants alongside the ever-popular Food Hall.
