Thinking green takes centre stage at Cathedral celebration

Almost one year since Gloucester Cathedral installed solar panels on the Nave Roof, a celebration of nature and sustainability will take place on Sunday, October 1.

Thinking green will be centre stage at this free event showing ways we can all be a little bit greener.

Visitors will have the chance to learn more about how solar panels help the Cathedral work towards a greener future today as well as having the chance to step back in time with hands-on activities with Tir Na Nog Heritage.

Activities ranging from grinding home grown corn, making a herb remedy to willow weaving will show how Gloucester's Benedictine Monks lived sustainably here in the past.

Guest bee keepers will explain the importance of bees to the environment and how we can all help them to thrive.

Upcycled art activities delivered by Salaric Crafts will show visitors simple ways to use up scrap and junk, plus music will be performed by a local community choir led by Natural Voice practitioner Monika Murrell to raise awareness of water use and water aid.

Information from Scrubditch Care Farm will showcase their amazing work with disabled young people working the land attending with many of their volunteer team.

Helen Jeffrey, community engagement manager at Gloucester Cathedral, said: "It is core to the work of the Cathedral to promote sustainable living. We are delighted to have such a varied group of local organisations and individuals to provide information and activities at this event that show us all how we can be a little bit greener."

The Harvest Festival Celebration Event will run in the Cloister and Cloister Garth of Gloucester Cathedral on Sunday, October 1, from noon to 3pm. Entrance is free.

A special County Harvest Thanksgiving Service will follow at 3.00pm in the Cathedral Nave to which all are welcome.
