Spectacular light installation to shine bright at Gloucester Cathedral

Where: Gloucester Cathedral Lady Chapel

When: Thursday, January 16 (from 1.30pm) to Sunday, February 23

Gloucester Cathedral is hosting immersive artwork to recognise Gloucestershire refugees throughout history.

Opening today (Thursday, January 16), the free exhibition, titled 'Where There is Light', marks the culmination of events celebrating 20 years of Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (GARAS) and features artwork by Gloucestershire based digital arts group, Squidsoup.

Working in partnership with the Everyman Theatre, The Music Works and Gloucester Cathedral, the exhibition will provide a truly poignant, immersive sensory experience to visitors. It aims to raise awareness of the crucial work GARAS does to support asylum seekers and refugees across the county.

Adele Owen, of GARAS, said: "We are really excited to be ending our 20th birthday celebrations in this inspiring and innovative way. As we start the New Year and decade, our wish for refugees here and across the world is that they find light in the reception they receive. We hope they find an opportunity to start to rebuild their lives."

A specially designed soundscape created by the Everyman Writers Lab, The Music Works and Squidsoup accompanies the exhibit, giving an audio narrative featuring stories of people from various countries who are now living in Gloucester and who have used the services that GARAS offers.

Squidsoup installations have featured at galleries, music and light festivals all over the world and are currently displaying in Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona and Millennium Square Bristol.

Artist and founder Anthony Rowe is thrilled to have the artwork exhibited locally. He said: "We are delighted to have this opportunity to show our work in a new context and to a new audience, highlighting the struggles that refugees and asylum seekers frequently face, and celebrating organisations that have been set up to help them."

Visitors to 'Where There is Light' will see the Lady Chapel transformed into an environment where virtual and physical worlds coincide. Visitors become part of the artwork as the light and sound changes around them.

'Where There Is Light' will take up residence in the Lady Chapel at Gloucester Cathedral from today at 1.30pm until Sunday, February 23. Please check the Gloucester Cathedral website for the daily opening times of 'Where There is Light'.
