Open week for award-winning county music service

Where: Various venues across Gloucestershire

When: Monday, October 1, to Saturday, October 6

Gloucestershire Music's weekly music groups and centres will be opening their doors from October 1-6 to anyone who's interested in seeing what they do, or perhaps joining one of the groups or music centres.

There are groups for people at all stages of learning music, from beginners to more advanced players, and adult groups too.

Beginners and intermediate young musicians on a range of instruments can come along on Saturday, October 6, to the Brookfield Music Centre, Gloucester (Sir Thomas Rich's School, 9.20am-12.30pm), Five Valleys Music Centre, Stroud (Archway School, 9.30am-12.30pm), Forest of Dean Wind Band Music Centre, Coleford (Five Acres High School, 10am-1pm).

Young jazz players (grade 4 to advanced) will find a thriving bunch of dedicated young jazz stars at Jazz Live in Cheltenham on Wednesday, October 3, from 6-9pm at Bournside School, Cheltenham.

On Thursday, October 4, advanced young players (grade 5+) can also visit one of GM's three award-winning County Youth Music Groups that converge on St Peter's High School each Thursday. These include the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra (6.30-9pm), Gloucestershire Youth Wind Orchestra (6.45-9pm) and the Gloucestershire Intermediate String Ensemble (7-9pm).

Sing, Sing, Sing for Gloucestershire

Both Brookfield and Five Valleys Music Centre offer choirs and vocal opportunities. Our very own Gloucestershire Youth Choir is also taking applications from singers currently in years 7-13 ready for their first course in October half- term.

Beginner bands for youth and adult musicians

If you are a young person and absolute beginner or have just been playing for a few weeks then you can benefit from free sessions via our First Access Music Ensembles (F.A.M.E.). Open to students of school age.

GM's adult Learn As You Play sessions are held at music centres and at the Lakeside Concert Band and provide adults with the opportunity to learn to play and instrument.

Adult Music Groups

There are groups for adults too including: Jazz2Go and the Colwell Arts Jazz Ensemble (Wednesday, October 3 at 7-9pm at Bournside School, Cheltenham); Colwell Arts Orchestra (Wednesday, October 3, 7-9pm, at the Colwell Arts Centre, grade 4+); Lakeside Concert Band (Thursday, October 4, 7-9pm Lakeside School - adult wind, brass and percussion players grades 1-4); Five Valleys Adult Wind Band (Saturday, October 6, Archway School 9.30-11.30 adults grades 3 - 6); Gloucestershire Symphonic Wind Orchestra (Monday, October 1, 7-9pm in Gloucester at the Colwell Arts Centre, advanced adult wind, brass and percussionists only with a minimum grade 7).

Membership for groups works out at around £5 per week payable via our music card scheme.

Steven Legge, head of instrumental and vocal tuition, said: "GM has some great opportunities for players of all levels and all ages. We aim to provide opportunities for those taking their very first steps into learning an instrument as well as support advanced musicians.

"GM has won many national awards in recent years and are justly proud of their achievements. Why not join us to find out more?"
