Highnam Court gardens open for Pied Piper
By David Wood | 29th August 2024
This Sunday, September 1, the glorious gardens at Highnam Court are open from 11am to 4pm and the weather looks fabulous.
Open gardens are very popular with gardening enthusiasts, nature lovers and families, showcasing an abundance of flowers, shrubs, trees and hard landscaping. Children love to follow the sculpture trail.
The 40 acres of Victorian landscaped gardens surround the magnificent Grade I house (not open), set out by artist Thomas Gambier Parry.
A stunning one-acre space features over 8,000 roses. Visitors can also see numerous wood carvings, Asian inspired planting and a kitchen garden.
Exciting ornamental lakes and woodland areas feature shrubberies and listed Pulhamite water gardens with grottos and a fernery.
There is plenty of shade and seating to rest a while, take in the views and enjoy your picnic.
Highnam Court was built in 1658 after the original house was seriously damaged in the Civil War. Since 1994, Roger Head OBE has owned and lovingly restored the house and gardens to their former glory, with many new additions that enhance the original design.
Recharge with fabulous teas, coffees and cold drinks and a tempting selection of delicious homemade cakes to purchase in the Orangery, located by the Highnam Court house.
Highnam Church is also open from 1pm, just a short walk across the car park.
It's just £6 entry for adults and children under 16 are free. Dogs are allowed on short leads.
All the entry fees and refreshment sales from this Open Garden Day and the one on Sunday, October 6, benefit the Pied Piper Appeal, Gloucestershire's children's charity.
