Goldwork Guild brings exquisite textiles to Gloucester
23rd August 2017
Where: Nature in Art, Twigworth, Gloucester
When: Until September 10, 2017
A magnificent display of gold, silver and metal work embroidery has gone on show in Gloucester for the first time.
The Goldwork Guild is displaying modern, as well as a few antique textiles and will be demonstrating this ancient craft at Nature in Art until September 10.
Goldwork dates back over 2,000 years when only royals, nobility and those of great wealth could afford such magnificence in garments, robes, domestic furnishings and religious embroidery.
It is one of the oldest embroidery techniques, using metal threads to create articles of great beauty.
The Goldwork Guild of Embroiderers was established in 2014 by Janice Williams, graduate of the Royal School of Needlework and Master Goldworker.
She says: "Due to the length of time it takes to create these beautiful works of art, the Goldwork Guild can only put on an exhibition every three years, and this we do in different parts of the country.
"This year we are delighted to be exhibiting in the magnificent splendour of Nature in Art at Wallsworth Hall, which is also steeped in history."
Throughout the exhibition at Nature in Art, members of the Goldwork Guild will be in the gallery daily, demonstrating and working on their own goldwork projects, as well as answering questions about this specialist art form.
On August 31, September 2 and 3, Marianne Bischof from Austria will be in her national costume and demonstrating her own beautiful embroidery and goldwork.
Nature in Art is open from Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holidays from 10am to 5pm. Admission is £5.25 for adults. Under-eights go free.
