Gloucestershire home to 'spookiest place in the UK'

St Briavels Castle in the Forest of Dean has been named the spookiest place to visit in the UK.

On Halloween, nothing quite compares to ghost stories in the dark, carving pumpkins or trick or treating. This year, why not add a bit more 'spook' to your festivities by visiting the spookiest spot in the UK, as determined by the researchers at SlotsUp, who have unburied the top must-visit, formidable sites across Europe.

Famously known as Britain's most haunted castle, St Briavels, near Lydney, was originally built by the Normans and has stood ominously for over a thousand years.

It is now occupied by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) but the exterior of the castle and moat can be viewed during any reasonable daylight hours.

The castle is located suspiciously close to The Ancient Ram Inn, which is a Grade 2 listed building that is also known for its paranormal activity.

Some of the ghostly occurrences reported in the castle include scratching, humming, sounds of a crying baby and even shadows that block the doorways and exits.

Some people who have stayed at the castle have even reported the sensation of being pinned to their beds, unable to move.

Please be aware due to changes in the way the YHA is operating during 2021/22, access to the inner bailey grounds and interior has been suspended until further notice. The inner bailey and courtyard can normally be visited 11am-4pm from April to October. It is anticipated this will resume in 2022.
