Day of celebration of Gloucestershire's apples

Bring your own apples to Apple Day at the Folk of Gloucester on Saturday, October 19.
Apple Day is the annual celebration of Gloucestershire's Orchards and cider industry.

Working alongside the Gloucestershire Orchard Trust, The Folk of Gloucester is putting on a day of music, dance, activities and demonstrations, all of which pay homage to the amazing variety of apples in Gloucestershire.
Visitors can watch the traditional horse-drawn cider press in action, or have a go on the apple bike: a pedal-powered apple crusher designed by local inventor Patrick Furley.
This year, for the first time, members of the public are invited to bring in their own apples. These will be washed and added to the mix for people to crush themselves on the apple bike. If visitors bring their own container, they can take home an equivalent amount of apple juice to drink or make into cider.

Louise Williams, CEO of The Folk of Gloucester, said: "This is a fun and rewarding opportunity for families to learn about the apple pressing process by taking part themselves. It's also a fantastic way to celebrate the humble apple in such beautiful surroundings."
Patrick Furley, local wine and cider maker, was keen to develop a more efficient alternative to the electric apple crusher. Four years ago, he designed the apple bike using a stationary exercise bike he bought from Facebook Marketplace.
The result is a fun, healthy and eco-friendly way to press apples - one that can be used anywhere to raise awareness of Gloucestershire's long history of cider making.

As well as visitors' apple contributions, apples grown in the Folk of Gloucester's garden will be used, as well as those from the orchards at St Augustine's Farm, Arlingham, to bring yet more apples to the event.
Further highlights include:
- Over 30 varieties of apples to try that you won't find in the shops
- One of the last surviving horse-drawn cider mills in the South West
- Morris dancing performances in the street and the Folk courtyard
- Traditional music and apple-based songs throughout the day
- Children's activities
- Stalls from local makers and producers including Severn Cider
- Bar and café serving hot and cold drinks, lunch and snacks
The event is open from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free with donations welcomed.
The Folk of Gloucester's address is 99, 103 Westgate Street, Gloucester GL1 2PG.
