Dance classes for wheelchair users launched in county

Where: Everyone Active Leisure Centre, Bourton-on-the-Water

When: Saturdays (adults) 1pm-2pm; Mondays (children) 3.30pm-4.30pm

Enterprising occupational therapist Lizzie Large has put her best foot forward to launch new dance classes for wheelchair users in Bourton-on-the-Water.

These are the only such classes running Gloucestershire and have already proved to be very successful in Oxfordshire.

Cotswold Wheelchair Dance is now putting out a call for members to join its 'Everyone Can Dance' classes following their success in West Oxfordshire since 2016.

Offering ballroom and Latin dance classes for people with disabilities, including wheelchair users, the classes are aimed at teaching anyone with a passion for dance new skills, or a chance to brush up on old ones.

Weekly adult classes at Everyone Active Leisure Centre in Bourton-on-the-Water were launched on Monday, January 7 from 1pm - 2pm, while children's classes started last Saturday from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. Your first session is free!

Classes are suitable for all ages and have already been very successful in Oxfordshire and in care homes around the county.

Lizzie added: "Dancing has been proven to increase endorphins, the body's natural feelgood drug, and it also helps with co-ordination and posture which has its own benefits.

"It also helps to reduce social isolation as it's a great way to meet new people and lots of fun. So please come and join us. Regardless of your disability and needs we can adapt our classes and dances so you can get the most out of the class.

"If you require a carer please bring them along and they can support you in the class and could even become your dance partner!"

Some quotes from dancers in Oxfordshire:

"I love dancing with my friends and have great fun every week, as well as getting the chance to learn different dances." - Katie

"It is my favourite time. I like the music. It makes me feel happy. Thank you." - Ali

"It is fantastic fun. It helps me to get more confident with my chair in a safe environment, doing different manoeuvres and different speeds. It is also very sociable." - Jill
