Community nature events aim to banish the blues

If you want some inspiration to get you out and moving during the cold, grey days of January, Stroud Valleys Project (SVP) has a variety of fun events coming up - and everyone is welcome to join in.

On Saturday, January 18, the charity is inviting the Nailsworth community to come and take part in a tree-planting push in King George V Field, along with Nailsworth Town Council.

Wrap up warm and drop by to wield a spade, hammer in a post, or wrangle a wheelbarrow any time between 1pm and 3pm. Earlier in the day, Nailsworth Town Council is hosting a wassail and tree-blessing at Miles Marling Field; that runs from 10.30am until noon.

On Sunday, January 19, SVP joins arch-collaborator Norah Kennedy for an afternoon of willow taming! The team will be wrestling with the overgrown willow tunnels and dens in the main play area of Stratford Park in the centre of Stroud, trimming, tidying and weaving them back into shape, and they're inviting people to drop in and join them between 1pm and 3pm.

Both those events are free.

On Sunday, January 26, ecologists based across the district will be joining forces with SVP and local ecologist David Bullock for a real-time Citizen Science event.

The team will be tracking jackdaws as they fly across the hills and valleys of Stroud to roost in the trees of Stratford Park, using both modern and old-fashioned technology. There are 25 spaces available to join the team and track the 'pesky beaks' as they make their noisy way through the skies, with adult tickets costing £7 and children £3. David will also be answering questions about jackdaws and other roosting birds.

To find out more about any of these events, visit the Stroud Valleys Project website or drop into the SVP eco shop in Threadneedle Street, next to Stroud's Jobcentre.
