Artist's one-man show of oils and watercolours

Where: Fosse Gallery, The Square, Stow-on-the-Wold

When: Sunday, October 6, to Saturday, October 26, 10.30am to 5pm

A new artist exhibiting at The Fosse Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold is past president of The New English Art Club - Richard Pikesley.

Richard is having a one-man show of oils and watercolours from Sunday, October 6, to Saturday, October 26.

There will be around 40 works in the show and prices range from £500 to £4,000. The exhibition gives Richard the opportunity to show paintings from some of his travels both south and north of the globe as well as including pictures of the West Country landscape and coastal subjects that are central to what he does when he is closer to his home on the Dorset coast.

Richard said: "The further south I go as a painter, the more I'm swept away by the eye-ball popping intensity of colour. The far north however, has astonished me with the beauty of a more restrained palette which allows the few notes in each 'colour chord' to chime like bells with real power.

"Painting in Iceland, the most recent of the trips documented in this exhibition, on its north coast and very close to the Arctic Circle, I experienced the long days of the Arctic summer when the sun hardly dips below the horizon and it was light enough to paint

outside at midnight."

The show is a mixture of oils made on the spot 'en plein air', with some larger canvases worked in the studio as well as a few watercolours.

Richard makes regular trips to Puglia, Isola di Ponza and Elba in Italy, Seville and the Andalusian countryside in Spain, Iceland, Harris and Lewis in the Scottish Hebrides and closer to home, Devon, Somerset and Dorset coast.

Born in 1951, Richard Pikesley studied initially at Harrow School of Art before going to study at the City of Canterbury College of Art for three years. Within a year of leaving, he was elected to the New English Art Club. He was elected President in 2013.

The complete exhibition can be viewed online at www.fossegallery.com . Opening hours are Monday-Saturday, 10.30am-5pm.
