12 Days of Christmas at Puzzlewood

Where: Puzzlewood, near Coleford, Forest of Dean GL16 8QB

When: December 15-16, 22-24.

This Christmas, Puzzlewood is holding a very special event within its historic and ancient woodland in the Forest of Dean.

The fascinating forest is reputed for its picturesque woodlands and unique tree and rock formations, creating meandering paths and magical scenery.

Puzzlewood is also a popular filming location for TV programmes such as Merlin and Doctor Who, as well as the CBeebies' show Tree Fu Tom.

This year a section of the woods will be decorated in The 12 Days of Christmas. Each verse will have its own display, designed by different artists, using a variety of materials and some will encourage you to join in. Days 8, 11, and 12 are particularly noisy!

Plus, back by popular demand, is Puzzlewoods's Christmas decoration activity - a chance to create something special to take home and hang on your tree and write and decorate your letter to Santa. Santa isn't here because he is very busy getting ready for the big day.

Puzzlewood's 12 Days of Christmas are:

One Partridge by Steve Pickup, The Willow Bank

This beautiful sculpture is created entirely from willow. Steve is an amazing artist and he designed and planted the willow maze at Puzzlewood. The Willow Bank has been working with this versatile material and running courses for 15 years.

Two Turtle Doves by Louise Brookes

Needle felting is the art of creating sculptural pieces by stabbing carded wool with a fine barbed needle. The barbs pick up the wool fibres and tangle them together making a solid shape. In needle felting, if you can imagine it you can make it!

Three French Hens by Georgie Haywood

After being made redundant, Georgie decided to work for herself! She started with driftwood pictures, then tried something else, a string sheep with a driftwood face and strange twig legs. He sold straight away so she started making more!

Four Calling Birds by Claudia Peake

Claudia graduated in textile design and went on to share her passion for design, teaching and collaboration by supporting the development of a rural textile business in Botswana, before starting a career in education on return to the UK. Claudia now works as a self- employed artist/designer, often seen in Primary Schools leading large scale collaborative projects through drawing, painting, textiles and mosaic.

Five Golden Rings

Made onsite by our team, with help from M-Tech Engineering in Coleford.

Six Geese-a-Laying by Jenny Cape

Created from recycled products, Jenny is an amazing puppeteer. She runs creative workshops for children in schools, at community events and we recommend her children's parties. Jenny believes we should all give our children the freedom to explore their creativity!

Seven Swans-a-Swimming by Claudia Peake

Eight Maids-a-Milking by Melanie Hughes

Melanie's loves making a wide range of crafty products. Her beautiful handmade cards inspired us to ask her to this create the maids-a-milking illustrations. She's also helped create the musical milk bottles with Amy Ruck our apprentice.

Nine Ladies Dancing by Melanie Hughes, one of our managers and Amy Ruck, our apprentice

Ten Lords-a-Leaping by Steve Lloyd

Steve worked at Puzzlewood and, realising he had a artistic eye, he was asked to create the Lords. We hope you agree they look fantastic leaping around in our mossy trees!

Eleven Pipers-a-Piping and 12 Drummers-a-Drumming

Put together by us for you all to have a little bit of noisy fun. Enjoy!

As well as the magnificent forest, Puzzlewood also invites everyone to see lots of their farmyard animals. Find your way through the willow maze, enjoy the racing track, have fun in the outdoor playground and after all the excitement, have a well-deserved snack in the cafe and even leave with a gift from the Puzzlewood gift shop.

There's no need to book, just come along, wrap up warm and enjoy. Normal admission prices apply, no extra for Christmas.
