Punchline Talks! The B!G Interview with Lucien Butler, founder and co-owner of Fitbakes

Sponsored by Infrastar IT Solutions

In just seven years, Lucien Butler has seen Fitbakes - the healthy snack company he started with his wife Ella - enjoy a meteoric rise.

What started as a business born on their kitchen table in 2018 has now grown into a brand that is stocked by a number of the UK's major supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Holland & Barrett, selling about four million products last year.

"We originally founded the idea on trying to find a solution to high fat products like cakes and snacks," says Lucien. "We developed the recipes from home and started to build a range of healthier cake products. We realised there was a gap in the market.

"The first three months we did sales of 16,000 from the kitchen table and then we have pretty much doubled every year from that. We eventually had to move out to find co-manufacturers and that's where we are now."

Fitbakes currently has a 10-strong team dotted around the country with a warehouse for its products in Staverton.

Brazilian-born Ella, who is a qualified nutritionist, is Fitbakes' CEO while Lucien is the COO.

Lucien added: "We have gone from an original healthier cake product to a smorgasbord of different snacking options that are both sweet and savoury all designed to be low carb and helping people to monitor their glucose levels. We make a range of products that traditionally would be a treat.

"We are now growing at quite a meteoric rate. By the end of the decade our goal is that Fitbakes will be in most kitchen cupboards around the country with sales of £20m to 30m. The market is there. There is nobody else offering the kind of solutions we are."

Watch the interview to discover how Fitbakes took their products from the kitchen table to the supermarkets.

What does Lucien think is the reason for the company's startling growth?

And what's been their biggest mistake or something they would have done differently?

How does it work with them running the business as a couple?

Watch the video to discover how in an earlier life, Lucien used to collect the Pools money while a student and later sold aftershaves and insurance door to door.

And find out how as a student Lucien found himself drumming with his band in an X-Factor type competition in front of Timmy Mallet, Roger Taylor of Queen and Joan Armatrading, and the reason they didn't get through to the next round.

Finally, Lucien offers the benefit of his experience in giving his top 3 business tips.
