How to keep cool in hot weather - Simon Hewer of Hewer FM

By Simon Hewer of Hewer Facilities Management

As the sizzling temperatures continue in the UK, here's some top tips to keep you and your business cool.

From Simon Hewer managing director of Gloucester-based Hewer Facilities Management - mechanical, electrical services, plumbing and heating specialists.

During hot weather you should open doors and windows early in the morning to help cool the house ( the earliest as possible if its colder outside than it is in, especially if there is breeze - so about 4.30am/5.30am is great, cool the house down before everyone else gets up, they'll love you for it.

Once the sun is up, close the windows and draw your curtains or close the blinds on the side of the house where the sun is shining.

Close doors and windows by early morning (7.30- 8.am) to stop the warm air from coming in. Turn off fans when you are leaving the room.

Other tips for keeping cool include dunking your feet in cold water and wrapping a cold towel around your neck.

Stay away from the stove and oven. Summer is the time for barbecues and eating food outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful evening weather.

Heat rises, so stay close to the ground.

On another heat-related topic, this is the ideal time to get your boiler serviced.

During periods of hot weather many people forget about getting their boiler serviced, but it is the ideal time to do so and avoid the rush in the winter months. By ensuring that your boiler is serviced you are making sure that it is as efficient as it can be.

Make sure that your system is clean and consider having it power flushed. This will remove sludge and limescale and improve its efficiency, saving you money.

By servicing your boiler, you can avoid breakdowns when you need the heating on - again, these can be very expensive and inconvenient.

In the winter you may struggle to find a reliable heating engineer to do the work and even more likely to find that the price for work is higher in these busier periods.
