E177 Punchline Talks! with Daniel O'Neill, Martin Surl, Talitha Nelson and Sam Holliday
By Mark Owen | 22nd November 2024
Each Friday, Punchline-Gloucester.com editor Mark Owen is joined by leading Gloucestershire business figures from a range of backgrounds to review Friday's national and regional newspapers, discuss what is happening in their own business sector and in their own individual businesses.
Finally, they round off by picking the stories that have caught their eye in this week's Punchline-Gloucester.com.
The Business Breakfast Briefer show is sponsored by Hazlewoods Accountants and Business Advisors.
This week's panel of experts were:
Daniel O'Neill - co-founder of ProCook - the company has six stores and 800 staff, with a turnover of £70 million. Last year, Daniel stepped down from the day-to-day running of the business. However, we'll find out how important this Christmas trading period is to the business, what are the latest kitchen trends, how their range of small electrical products is doing and what else is he working on.
Martin Surl - ex-Gloucestershire pioneering Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The former police officer was the first incumbent of the role as an independent from 2012 to 2021. However, he lost his job to Conservative Chris Nelson. He stood again in this year's May election as a Liberal Democrat candidate, missing out by only 700 votes. We find out why, in his opinion, the Gloucestershire Constabulary is struggling financially, and on a lighter note, what he's up to next.
Talitha Nelson - CEO of Gloucestershire Community Foundation - GCF has delivered over £3.5 million in grants, supporting and reaching over 380,000 people in Gloucestershire communities, but the need continues to escalate. We'll find out more about that and how we can all do our bit to help.
Sam Holliday - Business development manager - FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) and ex-editor of The Bath Chronicle. We all now realise the impact of the chancellor's Budget raid on business with NI going up, the thresholds that people start to pay going down and the increase in the minimum wage - and it looks like it's going to be a cold winter with an increase in energy bills. We find out how Gloucestershire's SMEs are faring and feeling.
Another jam-packed edition as always. Also covered today - John Prescott, the impact of the NI and minimum wage on businesses, the unfairness of business rates, charities in distress, the colour of kitchen mixing machines, Gloucestershire Police chief and so much more.
