World’s first plastic-free paper bottle launched
By Sarah Wood | 16th July 2020
Johnnie Walker whisky will be available in a 100 per cent plastic-free paper bottle from early next year.
Drinks manufacturer Diageo said the bottle is made from sustainable pulp. It contains a pulpable resin lining rather than plastic, and is fastened with an aluminium cap, making it completely recyclable, as reported by REB Market Intelligence.
The bottle was created through a new company, Pulpex, established by a partnership including Diageo, Unilever and PepsiCo.
Further partners are expected to be announced later in the year, with each of the partners planning to launch their own branded paper bottles in 2021.
Diageo said Pulpex's technology will allow brands to rethink their packaging designs or move existing designs into paper, allowing for a variety of plastic-free, single mould bottles that can be used across a range of consumer goods.
