VIDEO: Why a trip to a county business park could be an expensive visit

Customers on one of the county's biggest business and retail parks are up in arms over fines being given out for parking in an area they thought was meant for the public.

Space to the front of the Delta Way-based David Lloyd-branded gym on Arlington-owned Gloucester Business Park is the area causing the issues.

But the land, not owned by David Lloyd Leisure or Arlington, but believed to be owned by property and planning consultancy firm Rapleys, is subject to its own rules with respect to parking.

Simon Hewer, of Hewer Facilities Management, Gloucester, a member of the gym for a number of years, is one of a number of drivers who has ended up paying the cost of the technicality.

"I parked in an area I thought was a parking area, only to find out it was not. It cost me £100. Many of the drivers will not know they are either parked breaking the rules about where they are parked or think they are being compliant," said Mr Hewer.

A walk around the plot revealed numerous other drivers who clearly thought they were parking correctly, but are in fact breaking the rules of the site.

"The signage is just not clear. The signs are very evident but what is written on them and what it means is not," said Mr Hewer.

Signs feature a series of icons designed to show motorists what is allowed and what is not and how long they can park for.

Jignesh Mehta, the manager of nearby Badhams Pharmacy, one of a parade of retail units directly opposite the land, said many drivers had been caught out.

"Initially there was an issue there for our drivers who have been fined as well, but they are now aware. There have been some bollards put up on some of it as well.

"We have also had some of our patients who have been fined. Some of them have taken the company to court and won their cases."

He added: "There should be better signs. The ones that are there are very small. You have to go up close to read them properly.

"There is parking for our customers around by Tescos and most park there now."

Punchline has contacted Rapleys, PCM and David Lloyd but is still awaiting a comment.
