WH Smith sales boosted by airport and railway stores

Sales at stationer and bookseller, WH Smith, were up six per cent in the 20 weeks to 19th January.
While high street sales down one per cent at the retailer, which has stores across the county, they were up by a huge 16 per cent at its travel division of airport and railway stores.
The company also has 420 international stores open in 28 countries, including over 90 airports outside the UK. WH Smith acquired US travel retailer InMotion late last year.
Stephen Clarke, group chief executive, said: "Our travel business continued to grow across all channels. This was driven by our ongoing investment in the business, including the roll out of our new concept stores at Heathrow, and growth in air passenger numbers. InMotion delivered an impressive sales performance over the Christmas period and integration into the group is progressing well.
"High street delivered a good performance, particularly in stationery, driven by good growth in Christmas cards, wrap, diaries and fashion stationery.
"Looking ahead, whilst there is existing uncertainty in the broader economic environment, the group is well positioned for the year ahead and beyond."
