Warning: Week-long road closure for night time resurfacing work

Traffic will be diverted around a county major route for several nights while resurfacing takes place.

The work is being carried out on the A46 Painswick Road in Stroud from 23 August as part of Gloucestershire County Council's £150m investment into the county's roads.

The A46 Painswick Road in Stroud is a major route in the county for buses and commuters. The busy road has deteriorated over time and therefore requires repairing.

Painswick Road will be resurfaced up to Salmon Springs from Thursday 23 August to Wednesday 29 August. To keep disruption to a minimum, work will take place overnight from 7pm - 7am.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: "These works will have a major benefit to local businesses and residents as well as keeping a popular route into Stroud moving safely and efficiently. I would like to reassure residents that by resurfacing the road overnight, we will keep disruption to a minimum and reduce potential delays."

During the works, access to the Salmon Springs Industrial Estate will be maintained from the north (Painswick) direction only. There will be no access via the A46 from the Stroud direction. Painswick Road will be closed to southbound through-traffic at the Pitchcomb junction of the A46/A4173. A signed diversion will be in place.

What's the diversion route?

From the south end of the closure, head west on the A4171 and join the A419 in Dudbridge. Continue west on the A419 over the M5 to join A38, then head north. At the junction with Bristol Road turn right to stay on the A38 Cole Avenue, then turn right onto the A4173 Stroud Road and continue south to the Pitchcombe junction onto the A46. The diversion is the same in reverse.
