WARNING: Road works on major commuter route

The A40 London Road, Sherborne, is the next road in our county to receive part of the county council's £150 million promise to upgrade the highways.

The A40 London Road is a major route into the county and at the end of the month it will be receiving its first bout of improvements. On 30th May the road, between Sherborne junction and Windrush, will receive essential patching to repair damages - including potholes - before a specialist surface dressing is laid later this summer.

To keep disruption to a minimum, the scheme will be carried out at night. Starting at 7pm on Wednesday 30th May, work will take place between 7pm and 7am until Wednesday 13th June (excluding Saturday and Sunday nights).

Crews will complete the patching over 3951m² of the road with 812 tonnes of material. For the safety of them and road users and, the road will be closed during the works and a signed diversion will be in place.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: "This scheme highlights our continued investment to keep the county moving and these improvements will lay the groundwork for more vital work later this summer.

"I'd like to reassure residents that by carrying out this work overnight, we'll minimise the disruption."

Local county councillor Ray Theodoulou, said: "The A40 London Road is a key route into Gloucestershire for local residents and businesses, so it is vital for this work to go ahead. I would like to thank residents in advance for their cooperation while the work is carried out."

What is the diversion route?

From the western extent of the closure on the A40, follow to the roundabout at Northleach. Take the first exit and head south on the A429 to Cirencester. Before the junction at the traffic lights, turn left onto Cherry Tree Lane. Follow this to the A417 and turn left.

Follow signs for Fairford and then Lechlade. At Lechlade, head north on the A361 to the roundabout with the A40 in Burford. Take the first exit onto the A40 and follow to the eastern extent of the closure at Windrush. The diversion is the same in reverse.
