Waitrose grows market share

Waitrose has increased its market share for the first time in two years.

The latest update from Kantar shows that spending at the high-end supermarket rose by 3.3%, helping to lift its market share by 0.1% to 4.5%, as reported by Retail Gazette.

It's the first time Waitrose, which has stores in Cheltenham, Cirencester and Stroud, has grown its market share since January 2022, when it invested in strengthening its food offer.

Kantar's data also revealed that Ocado is the fastest growing grocer for the fifth month in a row - with sales rising 10.7% in the 12 weeks to July 7.

And Tesco achieved its biggest market share gain in nearly three years, with 27.7% of the grocery market - up 0.7% on last year.

Kantar said that the poor summer weather had affected consumer spending - with sales of cold and flu treatments up 35% and suncream sales down 10%.
