VIDEO: Retired siblings make a new start

A brother and sister who came out of retirement are running a successful business upcycling furniture in Gloucestershire.

Ann-Marie Gleadle and Malcolm Mackie, who are both in their 70s, started Owlstone Barn on the Park Farm Industrial Estate in Greet, near Winchcombe, three years ago.

Malcolm said: "It was boredom, just being stuck at home all the time doing the same mundane things and we decided it was time to get out and do something and use our hands."

Ann-Marie said: "We had a practical upbringing, so we're pretty good at things like this."

Malcolm has a background in engineering, and they have both previously renovated houses, so it seemed like the right line of work for them.

Before starting the business, Malcolm and Ann-Marie looked at other shops doing a similar thing and decided they could do better.

As well as buying and upcycling furniture to sell, they do commissions for customers, such as repainting old furniture to match customers' new colour schemes.

Malcolm continued: "Customers have always been over the moon when they come back and give recommendations to friends."

The siblings have no regrets about starting their business and would advise other retired people to give it a go.

Ann-Marie said: "Stick at it! It's tough at the beginning and getting known out there. Just believe in yourself and enjoy it. We love coming in here."
