VIDEO: Flying the flag for Gloucestershire

Phil Clement's job is all about bringing investment into Gloucestershire.

As head of inward investment at GFirst LEP, the local enterprise partnership for Gloucestershire, Phil's role involves attracting UK and international investment into the county.

Following GFirst LEP's launch of its annual review last week, Punchline editor Mark Owen caught up with Phil and asked him about his job.

Phil said: "It's about showcasing the best assets that Gloucestershire has got in terms of particular expertise to an international audience and trying to attract companies into the Gloucestershire area.

"It's providing job opportunities for local people and also maybe supply chain opportunities for existing companies. We've targeted particular sectors that we feel we've got international expertise in. That includes Cyber, digital technology, agritech and aerospace, particularly around zero emission aviation."

Phil added: "I was visiting the largest cyber trade show globally which takes place in California each year known as the RSA Conference. I was meeting US owned companies predominantly and trying to attract those that are looking at the UK in their next activity internationally to try and get them to land an operation in Gloucestershire, working very closely with the Department for International Trade."

Asked about how his team chooses which events to attend, Phil said: "We try to cherry pick the ones that are internationally renowned, so we work closely with the Department for International Trade, They would highlight particular events that they are also working with that we would work in partnership with them on, but we also work with our sector experts across the different technology areas I've mentioned.

"For example, with agri-tech we work closely with the Royal Agricultural University, Hartpury University and Campden BRI and we've actually just had someone return from a Barcelona event called the Intelligent Farming Summit last week where they were flying the flag for Gloucestershire there, so we are trying to get some leads from that event.

"We're also working at Farnborough Air Show in the next couple of weeks flying the flag for zero emission aviation which our area is getting quite a niche in in terms of hydrogen power technology and battery power technology.

"With cyber we're working with the DiT going out to Israel working with the British Embassy in Tel Aviv trying to find companies in cyber technology in Israel that are looking at the UK marketplace. So we do work very much with local partners and with central government and we really do try to target niche events both in the UK and overseas in terms of where we should be flying the flag."

An example of the investment GFirst LEP has attracted to the county is ZeroAvia, based at Cotswold Airport at Kemble, which is involved in hydrogen-powered flights.
