Vandal offers to pay for repairs to actors' restaurant business

Whether it was the social media appeal, the star name attached to the business, or just guilt - a mystery man who broke the window of a Stroud restaurant came back to apologise.

Towards the end of August the window of The Diner in Stroud was smashed for the second time in five days - along with the window of nearby Stroud Yoga Space.

The latter was caught on camera, and police appealed for witnesses, as did the partner of Tamzin Malleson, the co-owner of the Nelson Street restaurant, actor Keith Allen.

"To whoever this may concern. On Friday night two drunks put in the window of the diner and yoga centre," wrote Mr Allen on social media platform Facebook.

"This morning at 8.50am the door glass was kicked in - the third this year - the first two times it was junkies, but not this time.

"I know you're not a junkie - you didn't have the haunted desperate look or demeanour of one.

"In fact, you look like you may have spent some time in the gym."

Police arrested two men believed to be behind the incident, one aged 18 and one 27, on suspicion of criminal damage on Friday. August 31. Both were released without charge.

What followed is what some might call a happy ending. Mr Allen called it a "win-win".

Posting again on social media Mr Allen said Tamzin, also an actor, had called and with some news.

"The guy who did it just walked in, asked for me, and apologised for putting the window in," she told him.

"It was incredible. He was genuinely apologetic, said he's been up all night, didn't know he'd done it and then offered to pay to have it repaired."

Mr Allen thanked the people of Stroud for the support, writing: "Respect to him for manning up and accepting his actions and going in and apologising to Tamzin directly. Either way, it's a win-win."
