US coronavirus vaccine test reveals impressive results

Hopes of a coronavirus vaccine being available in the coming months have grown after trial of a US product showed it was 94.5 per cent effective.

The news follows last week's announcement that a potential vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech was more than 90 per cent effective while results of another trial from Oxford University and UK pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca are due to be released soon.

The US vaccine by Moderna has been shown to last up to 30 days in fridges and at room temperatures for up to 12 hours.

According to Sky News, the Government is in "advanced negotiations" with Moderna over buying doses of the vaccine.

Moderna chief executive Stephan Bancel described the announcement of the test results as "a pivotal moment".

The company said it will be applying to US regulators in the coming weeks and expects to have one billion doses available for use next year.
