'Tsunami' of MOTs coming in next few months

Car retailers need to be ready for a 'tsunami' of MOT and wider sales opportunities this year after the disruption of Covid.

A market survey of businesses' recovery from 2020's COVID-19 lockdown period showed volumes 2.9% above expectations.

But in its first half year aftersales' performance results GiPA UK says car dealers need to be ready to make the most of a frantic second half of the year as the sector remains "far from having recovered its 2019 activity level".

Among national retailers TrustFord aftersales director Stuart Creswell said he was "feeling positive", according to a report in AM Online. He said they were prepared for an additional 110,000 MOTs set to be carried out across the UK in August and 580,000 in September.

Chorley Group aftersales director Pauline Turner is quoted as saying dealers need to take advantage of an approaching 'tsunami'. She said: "It's coming, and we have to be ready."

GiPA UK general manager, Quentin Le Hetet, said: "The real challenge for the workshops will be during the second half of the year as workshop will face unprecedented volume of MOT tests to be carried out.

"Levelling up their capacity is going to be challenging when thinking of shortage of staff, pressure on the part supply chain, and increase parts pricing due to raw material price increase. It is important to see every entry as an opportunity and make the most of it."
