Transport hub will get Gloucester moving

As Paul James said in jest as he addressed the private party at Gloucester Transport Hub, if he had asked people a few years ago to spend the afternoon at the bus station there would have been few takers.

This afternoon the 'bus station', now rebranded the city's transport hub, has probably never had so many of the city's great and good under its roof. Shaped not unlike an aeroplane wing, purposely reflecting the city's proud heritage.

Assembled too were the architects, from BDP, and representatives from Kier Construction, who led the building work, as well as Stagecoach, whose buses and staff will be bring the depot to life from Saturday (Oct 27) onwards.

Mr James, the leader of the city council which has spearheaded the project over the last few years, said: "There are a lot of people to say thank you to - especially to central Government for the £6.4 million of funding to make this happen."

He added: "Some people said this would never happen, but just as they said a lot of things in Gloucester would never happen, one by one we are ticking them off."

The transport hub has 12 bus bays, a shop and café, toilets, seating areas, a drivers' rest area, and is fitted with digital screens to deliver passenger information.

It is hoped, as Mr James said, the bus station (costing £7.5million in total) would become the catalyst for the next stage of the redevelopment of the city centre - King's Square.

Architects and planners already working on that phase of the city's future were there at the event and spoke positively about the on-going plans.

Charles Martell, High Sheriff of Gloucestershire, was one of those at the event - in full traditional costumer.

"I used to always be a bit hesitant about walking through Gloucester - but I just walked here in these clothes - and I felt comfortable," said Mr Martell, also a businessman and farmer in Gloucestershire.

"Gloucester has changed. I am excited for Gloucester. It is coming out - it is getting confident, it really is.

"I am happy telling people about it. I feel we are winning back the streets, one at a time. And the city deserves it, the people deserve it. It is an historic city. I have always proud to be from Gloucestershire, now even more so."
