Trading Standards warning to county residents

Gloucestershire Trading Standards is reminding residents of their right to cancel a contract following several reports of pressurised sales in the Cheltenham area yesterday.

Officers were alerted to traders offering to place properties into a 'trust' and to arrange 'Lasting Power of Attorney' in return for a hefty fee.

The company was charging up to £2,000 to provide this service. Trading Standards would advise residents can find information of how to apply for Lasting Power of Attorney via the Government website at https://www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney/overview

They would also advise consumers to be wary when dealing with cold callers, both on the phone and on the doorstep.

In most cases, if you have signed an agreement away from the trader's premises costing over £42, then you have the right to a 14-day cooling off period where you can cancel the service for any reason and get your money back.

The cooling-off period beings the day after you enter into a contract with the business, whether the contact is written down or if it's an oral contact.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member responsible for trading standards at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "We would always advise consumers to shop around and get at least three quotes when they are looking to buy a service.

"Residents should be aware that they can likely get these services much cheaper if they shop around online and check the government website."
