Topping out ceremony for new Cheltenham school

Ten lucky pupils got to take part in a topping out ceremony for the new school at Leckhampton in Cheltenham.

A team from construction firm Kier took a select group of pupils, teachers, governors and trustees to the top of the new building.

The school, located in Farm Lane, is expected to open to new pupils next year.

It recently caused a stir when a local resident called on councillors to consider renaming the 'outdated and unfortunate' Kidnappers Lane which runs adjacent.

But local councillor Martin Horwood said it was part of the area's heritage.

He told Punchline: "I'm sure it won't faze secondary school students at Leckhampton High - they see much scarier stuff on their Xboxes every day."

The team from Kier, took the pupils and other visitors up to the roof, where they explained that 'topping out' occurs when the building reaches its highest point.

They took a spruce tree up to the roof and this will now be planted in the grounds to 'grow with the school'.

The youngsters and others involved in the ceremony also got to admire the magnificent view.

The High School Leckhampton is run by The Balcarras Trust and headteacher Helen Wood says it aims to be a 'flagship school at the heart of its community.'

Helen Wood said: "Our school will be driven by a determination to secure the best educational outcomes for all our pupils, its unrelenting focus on teaching and learning and its commitment to continuous improvement."
