Top 10 ‘business deaths’

New data shows the 10 industries that suffer the highest 'death rates' in the UK.
Data from the Business Demography release by ONS analysed by Turnerlittle.com revealed that the number of UK business 'deaths' increased from 283,000 to 328,000 between 2015 and 16; a death rate of 11.6 per cent.
The highest rate, at 17 per cent, is seen in finance and insurance, compared with 13.3 per cent in 2015. Business administration and support comes in at second place, at 15.4 per cent - compared with 10.1 per cent in 2015.
There were much lower death rates in transport and storage (10.9 per cent), production (10.8 per cent) and retail (10.5 per cent).
The region with the highest business death rate was London, at 14 per cent, followed by Scotland at 11.8 per cent. Northern Ireland had the lowest death rate, at 9.2 per cent.
The UK five-year survival rate for business born in 2011 and still active in 2016 was 44.1 per cent. The highest five-year survival rate was found here in the South West, at 47 per cent, while the lowest was in London, at 41.7 per cent.
Some of the highest five-year survival rates were in health, with a survival rate of 54.1 per cent, and property, with a survival rate of 51.1 per cent. Accommodation and food services had the lowest, with just over a third (34.6 per cent) of businesses surviving for five years.
