Tips for employers on supporting staff through cancer

A group of people with experience of cancer has created a resource for employers.

NHS in Gloucestershire (Integrated Care Board) has a patient reference group made up of people with lived experiences of cancer. The group has created the short resource giving employers top tips on supporting employees through and beyond a cancer journey and would like to offer it to as many employers as possible.

The resource contains tips on supporting people through every stage from treatment to returning to work, as well as tips for employees supporting family members through cancer, whose work may also be impacted.

Tips include:

• Reassure your employee that you want to support them through this difficult time

• Have regular conversations and listen to what they want/ need from you for their physical and emotional wellbeing

• Signpost your employee to NHS and voluntary/ charitable support

• Respect privacy and only share information with consent

• Be open to making work adjustments and be flexible to requests if you can
