Timetable set for former prison development
By Mark Owen | 3rd April 2018
The developers of the former Gloucester Prison site have announced a timetable of when it is hoped work will begin.
City&Country have had extensive consultations on how the redevelopment will take shape.
It now includes just over 200 homes (mainly apartments) with seven new buildings and the use of the former chapel as commercial space.
If all goes well work will begin on the first phase in May 2019, taking two years to complete. The second phase starting in 2020 could take three years to finish.
City&Country say the scheme includes: "Retention of the historic former prison boundary walls with limited, sensitive new openings, including opening up the gatehouse."
The provision of 202 new homes will lead to the "creation of a new high-quality development within Gloucester city centre, making effective use of a redundant site, improving the townscape character generally."
The project will create 56 full time jobs and a further 31 indirect jobs with a £42 million investment. Gloucester City Council planners are due to consider the scheme in May.
