Thousands raised at Pied Piper Golf Day

History was made at the annual Pied Piper Appeal Golf Day at Brickhampton Golf Club on Friday.

For the first time in 18 years of the event, a competitor achieved a hole in one.

The accolade went to David Merrick of the AF Group team, a six handicapper, on the 14th, a 128 yard par 3 hole.

The event saw 29 teams of four players compete in a Stableford contest in which three of the four players in each team score while on par 3 holes everybody scores. There was also an ongoing yellow ball competition.

In third place were BB Lands with 123 points, Attwoolls were second with 126 points while the winners of the Malvern Tyres Rob Freeman Trophy were Gardner Garages with 131 points.

The golf was followed by a two-course meal and auction, compered by Nick Broady, chairman of The Pied Piper Appeal.

Nick said: "We know we've probably raised £14,000 but I haven't got the exact figure. It's fantastic. It was a great day and people enjoyed it.

"The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold. The course at Brickhampton was very good. The clubhouse is lovely and the food was brilliant. They always do a good job for us.

"Fair play to David Merrick, he put a bottle of whisky behind the bar so everybody could have a drink on him."

Mark Owen, editor of Punchline-Gloucester.com, who hosted a team, said: "It was a lovely day. There was a lot of banter and good spirits amongst the competitors. It's one of the highlights of my year. Punchline-gloucester.com's team didn't take it too seriously as we came second to last!"

"The generosity of the people in the room was quite astounding with so much money raised for such a great cause. Nick is fantastic at raising money. He has a unique way of upping the ante each time, it's something else. He's just been a wonderful chairman."
