This is what college's new innovation centre could look like

Last week Punchline reported on plans being submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council for construction projects at Cheltenham College.

Now we can reveal a selection of artists' impressions of how the college's new Centre for Innovation and Excellence could look once plans have been approved and building works are complete.

The development looks to replace existing administration and storage buildings, providing accommodation for its business and economics department, a lecture theatre to be used by a variety of departments and let for external use.

A design and access statement submitted with the plans reads: "Economics and Business Studies are popular and expanding subjects at Cheltenham College and this growth is reflective of a trend towards A-level subjects that have significant value in the employment market.

"Our current spaces for teaching these subjects are in the Wilson Building, where the classrooms are too small, not in the right location and are not adaptable for current teaching methods.

"As a functioning school of around 1,100 pupils, we are also short of large congregation spaces, and the lecture theatre will provide a space where the whole year group can gather and this will release the demands on Big Classical so that it will be more accessible for music and drama."

Facilities proposed for the new centre include a 183-seat lecture theatre, meeting room, atrium with servery and observation classroom as well as space for the Business and Economics faculty on the first floor to include six classrooms, staff and student resource areas.

The application adds: "As well as sponsoring the festivals and hosting events, we are also keen to improve our relationship with the business community.

"Having a large, purpose-built lecture theatre, with breakout rooms, sufficient well-located toilets, provision for catering and reception space, and high tech support we are confident that the CIE will become a venue where visiting business leaders can present cutting edge ideas to the Cheltenham community."
