Students in Gloucester will soon be able to call the beer cellar of a nightclub home - literally

It's the student dream - being able to stumble from the night club to your bed without having to pay for a bus ride home.

And now that dream can become a reality after plans to turn part of what was the nightclub beer cellar building in to student lets were approved by Gloucester City Council.

The plans, which were approved on Wednesday, will see 11 en-suite bedrooms and four self-contained apartments built next to Jumping Jax nightclub at 5-7 Brunswick Road in Gloucester.

It is the second phase of development on the site by Supreme Services (Glos) Ltd following a previous 2017 application to add seven student flats to the upper floors of the nightclub building.

The latest plans will see 457square metres of space that was previously used as storerooms and office space transformed.

Two existing extensions on the site will be transformed as part of the plans, with external staircases and walkways added for access and new windows installed.

Former office space that fronts to Jennings Walk will be transformed into five en-suite bedrooms on the first floor with a communal kitchen, dining and living area on the ground floor.

The one-time two-storey cellar building above and to the rear of the nightclub will have four self-contained apartments on the first floor and six en-suite rooms with a share kitchen on the second.

A noise impact survey said that the noise from the nightclub - a short stumble in the dark away from the flats has been accounted for in the plans.

However, the assessment said: "The sound proofing of the nightclub should suffice for the new student lets."

It added "The floors between the student lets will be sound proofed as detailed by the acoustic engineer

The advice given to the planning committee by officers spoke of being "aware that there is a significant volume of purpose-built student accommodation" being planned or built in the city.

It added there is a need to ensure that there is an "appropriate mix" in the city between student and affordable housing to contribute to balanced communities and a balanced housing market.

The advice goes on to state that the council is in the process of "engaging with Higher Education providers with a view to understanding the current and proposed needs" for student lets.

That will be used to form a document that will advise on future plans for student lets, but the council said that "in the absence of this document there is no objection to the principle of the proposed change."
