The long-awaited Elmbridge Court roundabout opens today

The first motorists crossed the new Elmbridge Court roundabout when it opened at 7am this morning.

After more than a year of delays caused by the extensive roadworks, the innovative scheme is finally open and features a 'hamburger' lane to take traffic through the middle of the roundabout.

Work started on the £7 million scheme last August and, since then, mountains of soil have been removed and miles of kerbs and drainage have been laid down, as well as vats full on concrete.

Gloucestershire County Council said the much-needed improvements will help relive congestion, saving commuters time and allowing a smoother flow of traffic.

One motorist who crossed it at 8.45am this morning said: "I wasn't sure how the hamburger lane would work and whether it would be a bit challenging, but it worked really well.

"I wanted to go right towards Tewkesbury and Forest of Dean exit and, once you get into the right-hand lane, the road takes you straight across the roundabout, with traffic lights to control the flow of traffic.

"It was very smooth-flowing when I got there, with no waiting time at all. It looks like it could be a great success."

If you're not using the hamburger lane, you use the roundabout as you would any other, including going right round to the Churchdown exit.

Punchline says: "Well done to the Gloucestershire County Council comms team - they've got some real mileage from the work being done here. Never has a roundabout been so well covered in the media. And we take our hats off to the workers and managers on the site, who have done a really great job over the 13 months of construction."

See funny roundabouts.
