School cycling fundraiser to raise 4Ed cash

Pupils and staff at The King's School in Gloucester are embarking on an ambitious 350 cycle ride on static bikes.

The challenge, taking place from today (February 3) until Friday (February 7), is to raise funds for the 4Ed campaign.

Punchline-Gloucester.com went along this morning to find out more and offer some encouragement.

Speaking from the static bike, David Morton, headmaster, said: "Pupils at King's are all contributing as much distance as they can to try and ride 350 miles in one week during the school day."

Together, they hope to raise £5,000.

David Morton continued: "We're really excited to be doing these kinds of challenges as part of our partnership work with the local community.

"The charity means a great deal to us. Kingsholm Stadium is literally just a stone's throw from where we are. There's always been a strong relationship between Gloucester Rugby and King's. The first match that Gloucester Rugby ever played was against King's School back in 1873!"

In July 2022, former Gloucester Rugby player Ed Slater announced he had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The 4Ed campaign was created to raise awareness and funds in support of Ed and his family's battle with the disease.

Ed, his wife Jo and GRFC captain Lewis Ludlow joined King's staff and students at their assembly to talk about the campaign and how the money we raise will go towards helping families affected by MND.

David Morton said: "Ed pre-recorded answers to questions to present to the pupils at their assembly at Gloucester Cathedral, using his eye scanner on his computer which read out his responses. It was really inspiring."

In 2022 Ed, together with friends and colleagues undertook the first 350-mile Ride Against Time, starting at Kingsholm and riding to Leicester (where Ed played before Gloucester), down to Twickenham and back to Kingsholm.

Gloucester legend Billy Twelvetrees repeated the route again in 2024 and the challenge at King's this week will be the third 350-mile Ride Against Time.

Pupils will have the opportunity to participate during PE and games lessons, at break times and even before or after school.

A team from Tayntons Solicitors is also taking part tomorrow (February 4) to help the school reach its goal.
