EXCLUSIVE: Thai restaurateur's exit signals sale of prime dining spot

A famous Thai restaurant in Gloucester which has become a landmark in the city’s dining options is planning to close, with the lease now being offered through agents Sidney Phillips.

With nearly 20 years of regular trade under its belt, Taste of Thai is described by the agent as a “good trading location” with “an excellent level of footfall for potential customers”. The business, at 117-119 Southgate Street, sits midway between Gloucester Quays and the city centre, opposite the Nelson Inn.

The Premises Licenced-restaurant largely occupies the ground floor of the building, with an upper level that has 26 covers, while a lower zone accommodates eight additional settings.

The agent said: “The premises would suit different types of businesses that wish to take advantage of this excellent and strategic location,” adding that  the town centre has been “enhanced in recent years with the leisure, retail, and residential development of Gloucester Quays which is now one of the areas premier destinations.”

Current décor features stripped wood effect flooring and a beamed ceiling while the facilities include a bar servery with a storeroom, ladies and men’s toilets, a trade kitchen and extraction venting.

The business currently trades on Tuesdays to Sundays, from 5.00pm till 10.00pm, with additional Wednesday to Sunday hours from midday to 3.00pm.

Latest accounts for the year ending March 31, 2024, which were for 49 weeks because the restaurant closed for three weeks during April, showed sales exclusive of VAT of £89,780, working on a gross profit of 69.7%. Companies House records also indicate that the business increased its staffing from three to four in the last year of trading.

As a leasehold, the address is offered with an expiry of 2038 at £38,000, including goodwill, fixtures and fittings. Stock at valuation is also available. The agents also states that the lease is a part repairing and insuring agreement from a private landlord, having begun last October. The rent is currently set at £8,000 per annum.

● Ukrit Rattunatum, the business owner, told Punchline-Gloucester.com: "Sadly as my mother, who lives in Thailand, is not in good health, we may need to return there at short notice. After nearly 20 years, we have decided to retire, but we have not set a date for closure while we hope to seek a new owner to continue the restaurant as it is."
