What makes Tewkesbury great?

A community street survey has been launched to understand what the everyday experience of Tewkesbury town centre is like for the people who use it.

The survey is being run by the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), a partnership between Tewkesbury Borough Council and Historic England to invest £1m into the regeneration of the historic town centre.

The findings of the study will be used as the basis for future plans to improve the town centre - and will ensure that any plans reflect the aspects of Tewkesbury that people think are really important.

The HSHAZ has commissioned Bristol-based consultancy Streets Reimagined to run the street survey for them to make sure that it is a genuinely independent piece of research.

Streets Reimagined will invite a wide range of people, from visitors to residents, to tell their researchers what would improve their experience of the town centre. The things which may make a difference could be anything from fixing a broken kerb stone to how proud you feel of your town, or from having more pavement space for pushchairs or wheelchairs to repainting a particular building.

They will be running drop-in street stalls where members of the public can give their feedback. These will be held on:

• Saturday, June 18, 10am - 2pm at the junction of Gander Lane and Church Street

• Tuesday, June 21, 10am - 2pm at the junction of Tewkesbury High Street and Bishops Walk

An online interactive map has also been created on which people can highlight issues and opportunities in the town - please visit Revitalising our High Street (talkingtewkesbury.com)

Finlay McNab, director of Streets Reimagined, who is leading the research said: "We want to hear from as many people as possible about their experience of living, working and visiting Tewkesbury town centre.

"We want to know what works well, what doesn't, and what changes (if any) people would like to see. We also want to hear from those who perhaps don't visit frequently about the reasons for this and what would encourage them to visit more often."

Rebecca Barrett, regional director at Historic England, said: "This study will get to the heart of what people value about Tewkesbury, and what they want to see improved. It's an important piece of work which will help shape decisions in the town centre for years to come. We're looking forward to seeing the results."

Councillor Rob Bird, leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council and lead member for economic development and promotion, said, "Tewkesbury is already a very special place to live, work or visit, but this audit will let us know what the people who really matter feel about their town. I hope as many as possible will respond to the survey and say what they particularly like or would prefer to see changed. We can then ensure that Tewkesbury town centre reflects people's views well into the future."
